“‘Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays,
And one by one back in the Closet lays.”

A quote read and forgotten long back. Somehow, the picture of a chess board has been coming on and off in the head for quite some time.

We call Sojish, secretly a “chess master”, because he does the team management and associated team shufflings in the company. Sometimes we have a good laugh imagining the enormous chess board, that might have been spread in Sojish’s head, with each of Poornam employee standing head bent in his / her black or white square.

Sometimes, the same thing happens in life too. The chess board is always there, players change, moves change and the end results also change. The invisible hands holding you, move you ahead. You are moved ahead, squares conquered by you, and at some point of the game, you are moved out…

What happens when you occupy two squares in the chess board of life and destined to be moved by some invisible hand? What happens when you realize that you are just one of the “pieces”?

Johnny To and Ka-Fai Wai has this beautiful movie Turn left, Turn right. To be frank, it portrays the most clichéd topic in the world. Yes, love..

Takeshi Kaneshiro and Gigi Leung live next to each other in the same apartment block. Each day, they leave their apartment, one turns right and the other turns left and takes their daily path. They never know or see each other.
You see one green umbrella and one red umbrella among the crowd, so close yet so far .. :-) Each moment, you wish for the best and see the worst. Once they meet in a park and have a nice time and exchange phone numbers. You think thats the end of the game.. No!! The unexpected rain soaked both of those paper slips..
In the run, both of them gets their own partners, and even those partners realize they are living so near and yet too far in life.. Even, their vain attempt to unite these people together by manipulating those invisible hands, doesn’t work.
The twists and turns lead you to the last 5 minutes, for you to see the climax. It is a wonderful one, where you see the Green umbrella and the Red umbrella , sitting together outside one apartment, whose door is closed :-)

At this moment of reflection, I even wonder whether it was another coincidence which made me watch the movie.

Tail end of the story : Sojish hates the word destiny. He generally hates helplessness.

(10:04:20 PM) Nasra: “I would love to change the world,
but they won’t give me the source code.”
(10:07:53 PM) Sojish: Fools wait for Source Code.
I just go ahead and hack it..

“The hands of fate play our game
We the players are given a name
Some are tame, others gain fame
Yet in the end, we’re all the same.”

“When you stand at that situation in life and realize that, no race takes you anywhere.. The track is always closed and rounded, the finishing point is always the initial point or more or less nearer to it..
Then why did you run after all? :-)

Midnight musings.. :-)
